Butcher

At a first glance, Butcher seems to be just a low-resolution 2D platformer in which you get to shoot stuff. And in most part it’s true. However, this little pixel-graphics creation has a dark side.

Butcher is a brutal 2D creation with a pinch of gore in it. You play the role of a cyborg whose only purpose is to kill kill kill. Equipped with a shotgun and whatever you loot from the guys you eliminate, your character can bring the pain.

Speaking of the latter, if you don’t manage a one-shot kill, you’ll have to put your victims out of their misery. It’s was a bit of a shocker to see how much the enemies scream from pain as they lay down on the ground shot beyond survival. It’s up to you to leave them like that to bleed out or to aim a bit better and silence them forever.

This is the part where you actually think it’s a good idea that you don’t get better graphics; it would be a bit too graphic.

Butcher features some well-polished gameplay that’s fast-paced and engaging. There’s never a shortage of stuff to shoot and the game isn’t all that easy to play too.

The gameplay mechanics are easy to pick up but permadeath is a thing, and making mistakes is something that happens quite a lot. Aiming and moving about is enjoyable, and it’s weirdly satisfying to shoot an enemy that has a jetpack and watch them go out in a big ball of fire. For a 2D low-resolution game, Butcher has good visual effects.

On a closing note, Butcher is way good for a platformer. Although there is a relatively large amount of violence, the game is still acceptable. However, with a start like this, it’s kind of scary to think about what the final thing will have to offer.
