Certain games are always going to be remembered as the ones that started a particular trend, while others are going to be remembered for defining an entire genre. Diablo 1 and 2 are the games that practically made hack & slash a widespread phenomenon, and it’s also the series that revolutionized the genre when it came to gameplay mechanics.

Book of Demons is a dungeon crawler that aims to remind you of how classic hack & slash felt and played, although it also includes a few modern elements. On top of that, it also mixes a few CCG elements in there, given the fact that you can toy with collectible cards as well over the course of your journey. However, the main goal is to kill as many monsters as possible and gather gold.

The mission is to descend through three levels of underground dungeons, namely the Labyrinth, the Catacombs and Hell. Each one of these sections has multiple levels, but you shouldn’t worry about running out of content, because besides the fact that there are three difficulty levels to explore, you can also use the Flexiscope system to tailor your own adventures depending how much spare time you have on your hands.

What makes Book of Demons so engaging is the fact that you tell it how much you have time to play and it tailors a dungeon that should take you exactly that to clear, which is quite neat. Thus, if you only have a few minutes before you need to head to bed, you can quickly clear a dungeon and not worry about starting something that might take too long to finish.

As for the actual gameplay, it’s all about clicking on things, moving around on a two-axis system and avoiding enemy attacks or special moves. Everything is achieved using the mouse, which might be a bit of a bother in the beginning. You can also find, collect and use cards along the way, since they come in handy whenever you need to cast special abilities to deal with nastier parts of the dungeon.

When it’s all said and done, Book of Demons is exactly what you need if you are in the mood for a challenge and you have nothing against repetition. Thus, it may not be original or groundbreaking in any way, but it truly makes you feel like you are playing the classics again, except that it’s a much more customizable experience.
