There are a few classic games that managed to create a name for themselves big enough to be relevant and memorable even after a few decades. Bomberman is one of these games, because the simple gameplay mechanics it featured managed to inspire countless spin-offs and clones over the years. Granted, very few got to be as refined and enjoyable as the original, but maybe this new one stands a chance.

BomberZone is an arcade game inspired by the original Bomberman, and it features many of the same ideas when it comes to gameplay mechanics, but it also brings some fresh things to the table. One of these is the fact that the game is much more survival-oriented than the original, especially when you consider the fact that it doesn’t feature a multiplayer component.

In short, your main goal is to survive for as long as possible on a map full of monsters that spawn on a regular basis, while using the classic Bomberman method to get rid of them: leaving bombs behind you. On the other hand, there are other ways you can improve your chances, including by picking up all sorts of power-ups that provide you with special powers.

Thus, some of these power-ups allow you to drop bombs that cause a much larger explosion than usual, while others enable your character to move a lot faster through the level. You have to watch out for the fact that enemies can leave bombs behind as well, not to mention the fact that a single touch from them is enough to summon the game over screen and take it from the top.

As for the graphics, there’s no real revolution in this case, but they certainly look decent. Thus, you play from a familiar top-down perspective, but the actual maps are three-dimensional. In fact the map as a whole is a sphere which means that you can go around it and enjoy a much more interesting spectacle. The music is not special in any way, on the other hand, which is a bit of a bummer.

BomberZone is not exactly the best Bomberman revival out there, but it’s certainly very enjoyable under the right circumstances. Moreover, it allows you to enjoy yourself in single player and fight against entire hordes of monsters.
