Creativity can go a long way in a video game, because players don’t mind having to build a few things on their own, as long as the end result is worth the trouble. The freedom is actually demanded in some cases and the sandbox model can be quite successful, with Minecraft being the most obvious example to illustrate the genre and its potential.

Bob Came in Pieces is a basic platformer that doesn’t look like much on a first glance, but things get much more interesting and complicated as you advance through the levels. In essence, the underlying concept revolves around being able to add or remove parts from the body of a miniature spaceship, which can be used to overcome a variety of obstacles along the way.

The process of modifying the ship is quite straightforward, but the number of different options you can try out is staggering, even with the most basic parts at your disposal. Every piece can be rotated and placed on the available slots, but most of them can also be combined with other components in order to obtain the desired design. Not only that, but the design of the ship actually has an influence on the gameplay, because it helps you solve the puzzles.

Puzzles are actually the core gameplay elements, because everything else is built around them. Along the way, you have to customize the ship in such a way as to move boulders, or even use special thrusters to push or drag objects. While some parts are mandatory to pass certain puzzles, the rest of the design is entirely up to you and it’s always fun to play around with weird ideas.

The game also takes advantage of a nice physics engine to simulate collisions and movement using rocket thrusters. Visually, the graphics are quite nice as well, even if the perspective only allows for 2.5 dimensions. However, a lot of work went into some of the levels, because they are very detailed and sometimes memorable, especially if you happen to struggle a bit with the puzzles.

All things considered, Bob Came in Pieces manages to remain intriguing for long periods of time, which makes it a good choice if you are interested in the genre. There are some rough edges to be polished as well, but overall, the game is definitely worth a try from everyone.
