Help a knight put her life in order after being secluded in a lonely village with no one familiar around her. #Visual novel #Interactive story #Adventure game #Novel #Fantasy #Dragon
Visual novels need to feature interesting stories and compelling characters, because there’s not much else to keep the players engaged. The gameplay is usually resumed to a few clicks needed to advance the text on the screen, although there are some variations, depending on how much of an impact the player has on the story and whether it’s possible to interact with other characters.
Blue Rose is an interactive visual novel in which you play the role of a knight by the name of Lena, who also happens to be a Templar of the Blue Rose. The game is much more interactive than your typical visual novel, meaning that there are always choices to be made in order to decide how the story progresses. Whether these choices truly affect the plot in a meaningful way, it all depends on how easy to please you are.
The story begins with an epic fight involving Lena, a few other knights and a dragon that comes out of nowhere. However, it doesn’t end very well for the knights, and Lena wakes up in a faraway village with no friends around. Hence, your role is to help Lena get acquainted with the quiet life and learn how to fend for herself when no one is giving her orders.
Just like most visual novels, there’s a dating sim component attached as well, which means that you get a chance to choose a partner and get closer over the course of the story. Naturally, the choices you make along the way also affect the way the game ends, and you can easily replay the entire thing and choose different courses of action in order to witness a different ending every time.
Lastly, the artwork is mighty important as well, because it’s what you look at for the entire duration of the game. Fortunately, everything is as good as it gets in this regard, especially when it comes to the backgrounds and the character design. Not much can be said about the soundtrack, on the other hand, but it tends to stay neutral most of the time, which is not as bad as it could get.
In the end, Blue Rose is a pretty decent visual novel, but it doesn’t impress in any way. The plot is not very original, the characters are quite bland and forgettable, and the choices you make are not as deep as they could have been.
