Visual novels are usually designed to help you escape reality, but it’s not always easy to create the proper atmosphere in order to achieve that. Granted, it’s important that you are making the effort as well, otherwise it doesn’t really matter how hard the developers try. The theme of the story has a lot to do with it, because some stories are easier to imagine than others.
Blue Bird is a visual novel in which you have to take decisions in order to influence the life of a high school boy who’s trying to put his life in order. The game can be a bit silly sometimes, but then again that’s sort of the premise of the entire plot, because sometimes it’s just not very serious. On the other hand, the underlying story is quite engaging and intriguing.
As such, you play the role of a boy by the name of Karin, who apparently has some kind of unpleasant past that’s very difficult to forget or ignore. In spite of this, he’s trying to make new friends and maybe turn things around, which is when everything starts to settle. Thus, he meets three girls, and you obviously have to choose one of them by the end of the story.
Since this is an interactive visual novel, you are allowed to make decisions and choose what to say in certain situations. The demo features a couple of junctions in the plot, but they are obviously never resolved in order to properly judge the effect you have on the story. However, it would appear that the experience should be pretty replayable, at least if you find the motivation to do so.
The graphics are important in the genre, because the lack of constant action leaves you plenty of time to admire the landscape and notice almost every detail. The artwork in Blue Bird is not particularly detailed, at least not when it comes to the backgrounds, but they are colorful and pleasant enough to create a nice atmosphere. On top of that, the soundtrack is pretty neat as well.
When it’s all said and done, Blue Bird is not here to revolutionize the visual novel genre, but it integrates very well in it. Hence, if you want to hear a cute, yet rather sad story, this promises to be quite the adventure when the whole game is going to be released. Until then, you can support the developers by backing their IndieGoGo campaign.
