Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King Demo

Most video games take themselves a bit too seriously for their own good, even if the writing is not sturdy enough to be worth a formal presentation. Humor helps a lot in such situations, because it’s a lot easier to enjoy a simple plot when it’s not trying to teach you a life lesson. Granted, the gameplay mechanics are still very important in the grand scheme of things, regardless of the story quality.

Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King is a retro adventure game with a few RPG elements and plenty of action to keep you busy. It also sports an open world that can be explored at your leisure, more or less, plus a humorous story with interesting characters. The vintage graphics are very nicely designed as well, which helps a lot with the overall atmosphere.

It all starts with a young girl by the name of Lily, who is about to get knighted by the king and become a defender of the realm. After receiving her new title and a cool name to go along with it, Lily the Knight of the Rose is sent to clear a few dungeons full of monsters and various unpleasant creatures. It’s a tough task, but the humor keeps things light and enjoyable all the way through.

The open world is not as impressive as it is in games like Fallout or Skyrim, but then again this is a small indie production. Hence, most of the maps are fairly small and there’s not much to see while you explore them. Every now and again you can find a chest or some other items that can be picked up and used as projectiles, or simply smashed to get the loot inside.

As for the graphics, it’s nice to see that the designers truly put some thought into the environments, because it feels like you are part of the world when you are out exploring. Granted, the dungeons might get a tad repetitive after a while, but then again that’s a trademark of the genre. There’s a jolly soundtrack to go along with the action on the screen.

In the end, Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King is far from an original entry in the adventure genre, but it features polished gameplay mechanics and a funny story that keeps you engaged. The graphics are nicer than in your average retro flick.
