Blockstorm

You’re walking along in this first-person shooter game with your trusty rifle when Walter White and Bender appear through a wall with a shovel and a bazooka, eliminating you on spot. That’s Blockstorm for you, a FPS that puts you in a Minecraft inspired world where you have to battle it out with other players in some unique worlds.

The goal in Blockstorm is to shoot at anyone who isn’t you or on your team, gather enough kills/points and win the round. You get to choose what primary and secondary weapons to equip, pick a few grenades and a shovel which you might expect to swing at your opponent when you’re out of ammo but that’s not the case here.

In Blockstorm, you’ll be using that shovel to dig your way across the map through building walls, trees, statues, mountains and anything else that gets in your way. This gives you a great sense of freedom when you want to strategically position yourself for a kill and we’re almost sure that in Blockstorm, the notion of going around stuff to get somewhere will become an obsolete notion.

Apart from tearing everything down with your diamond shovel, you also get a number of building blocks which you can use to create whatever you need, like a bridge to higher grounds or a sniping nest (campers will love this feature).

Blockstorm comes with a series of pre-designed maps you can play, which look great by the way, but you can also fire up the Map Editor and let your imagination run wild.

The same applies to the characters you play. Blockstorm offers a bunch of standard soldiers which can be found in nearly all FPS games but takes it up a notch by allowing you to build your own, unique character. You want to be Rambo with Mickey Mouse years ? Sure, go right ahead. Leon the professional in a Batman shirt ? Totally possible.

Blockstorm has that creative edge to bring to the table but it’s not perfect. Some of the maps are pretty big and in cases like that, the lack of a sprint feature for your character can make gameplay a bit tedious.

All-in-all, Blockstorm is a breath of fresh air for FPS fans everywhere who can put not only their aiming skills to the test but also their strategic creativity.
