Back in the 8 and 16-bit era, video games were far more difficult to complete, for a variety of reasons. For starters, there were no automatic checkpoints that saved your progress at different points throughout the levels, you just had to start from the beginning every time. You only had a couple of lives at your disposal, and losing all of them meant that you had to restart the journey from the first level.
Blob From Space is a retro platformer that aims to show you just how much effort it takes to play by the old-school rules, although you should also expect a lot bugs and badly implemented gameplay mechanics. The game is still in early access, however, so it’s only natural that it has flaws at the moment. As long as you have enough patience to get over these issues, the experience can be quite nostalgic.
To begin with, the story puts you in the role of a green blob by the name of Blob, who’s actually an alien from another planet. Unfortunately for him, the UFO he was flying crashes on an unknown planet, which means that he must fight his way through a variety of dangerous enemies and make it back home somehow. As you can see, the story is not that important, nor is it emphasized on.
Just like in every other platformer out there, most of your time is spent jumping from one thing to the other, but there’s a catch: you have a limited number of lives to waste. Whenever you lose all of them, you have to start the game from the beginning, which is quite annoying if you are not used to it. There are some cheat codes you can pick up that allow you to skip certain stages, but you still have to make it there by yourself at least once.
Unfortunately, there are some control issues you have to watch out for, especially when it comes to jumping. In order to pass certain sections, you’ll have to resort to wall-jumping, which requires good coordination and quick thinking. The game does not register your input very well, on the other hand, so it’s quite difficult to perform an otherwise simple task.
In the end, Blob From Space has quite a few flaws at the moment, but they can be fixed in the future. As long as the controls are fixed and maybe the level design is improved a bit as well, the game can turn out pretty sweet once it is complete.
