Blades of Time is a third-person action game that combines a shooter mechanic with sword wielding and magic.
The game is developed and published by a studio named Gaijin Entertainment, which also happens to be responsible for quite a few other successful titles like IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey and War Thunder. Blades of Time is considered to be a spiritual successor for X-Blades, a title that was developed by the same people almost a decade ago.
Blades of Time is a much grittier iteration in this series, which only borrows of a few elements of mythos from the previous title. That’s not much of a problem since it’s not like X-Blades has been a really huge success, so the gaming community won’t be all that upset that the game is not following the same story or ideas.
The players take the role of Ayumi, a hunter that’s trapped on a strange island. She needs to escape and defeat hordes of human enemies and other supernatural creatures. It’s not a story that’s going to win any kind of prizes, and it barely keeps the players connected, but that’s not the worst of the problems.
The gameplay has its ups and lows, but that’s just saying really gently that it’s not a good game. The engine looks terrible for the most part; the hit boxes weapons are terrible, the enemies don’t seem ever to miss, the low textures are dragging the game back, and the poor finish of the level is constant.
Even so, there are some interesting features, like the ability to rewind time. Unlike other games that take the characters back in time along with everyone else, in Blades of Time it creates a clone. You basically see multiple realities at once, one present and one that’s moving backwards.
This is really useful for solving puzzles and to take down powerful enemies. In fact, some enemies can’t be beaten unless you use this particular ability. Along the way, the player will gather other abilities as well, but the demo is pretty short and doesn’t introduce much more.
