Space is rather empty when you consider the big picture, even if there are billions and billions of stars and planets out there. The distance between them is just too great to describe the universe as crowded, but there are things we can be relatively certain about. Hence, there are probably no huge monsters roaming through space right now.

Blacksea Odyssey is a shoot ‘em up that allows you to explore the vastness of space and challenge all sorts of monsters while you’re at it, in order to prove yourself as the ultimate hunter. The game features a classic top-down perspective and smooth controls, although there are a couple of hang-ups you need to deal with for the moment, considering the early stage in the development process.

Story-wise, you play the role of a cybernetic character by the name of Old Man, who wants to participate in a competition with a few other brave hunters. The ultimate goal is to find and kill a Titan of the Stars, one of the largest and most powerful creatures roaming the universe. As long as you do not shy away from exaggerated science fiction concepts, the plot should get your imagination going from the start.

Your character has a few special abilities he can use in combat, such as a booster that allows you to pass through rock formations, as well as many other power-ups. Most of these can be acquired by finding special items during the missions, although you can also visit the store. These artifacts make the experience a lot more exciting in the long run, since you are always liable to find something new to equip.

From a technical point of view, the game doesn’t look bad at all, it’s just that the environments get a bit repetitive after a while. Other than the rock formations mentioned earlier, there’s not much else to look at while you explore the levels. Thankfully, at least the monsters are well-designed and quite different from one another, especially the large boss creatures that take forever to kill.

When it’s all said and done, Blacksea Odyssey has enormous potential, especially if enough content is added until the final game is released. It would also be great if the landscapes were a bit more detailed.
