In order to be more appealing to the public, wargames employ many balancing systems, which in turn makes them a tad less realistic. Not only that, but the action is also sped up a lot, so you don’t have to wait for too long in order to see the fruits of your labor. While such games can still be incredibly complex, they don’t come close to the tools used by the military to simulate battle conditions.

BCT Commander does not make any kind of compromises when it comes to realism and it tries to present the battlefield as close to reality as possible. Naturally, this translates in some rather complicated mechanics you have to get acquainted with, as well as a steep learning curve that requires a lot of effort to climb and master, especially if you are new to the genre.

For starters, you need to know that the game is based on a real simulator used by the army to simulate battle conditions, although it is a bit simplified to make it accessible to the public. Not only that, but it was also designed by an army officer, so you can be sure that a lot of experience and first-hand expertise played a role in the game’s development.

Unlike many other wargames, BCT Commander uses true real-time mechanics in order to dictate the pace of the action. In essence, this means that one in-game second is the same as it is in reality, which means that the units take quite a while to respond to your commands. Movement is also about as close to reality as possible, so you shouldn’t be surprised if your troops take quite a while to move from one point to another.

Lastly, the graphics are very basic and mostly symbolic, but that’s to be expected in a wargame of this caliber. The map is flat and full of lines, symbols, and grids, which really come in handy if you need to calculate distances. The terrain is also represented, so you know exactly what to expect if you decide to send your troops on a specific path.

When it’s all said and done, BCT Commander is not the kind of game you would want to pick up if you are a beginner with the genre, because it is quite complicated and it assumes you are already experienced. However, if you are a veteran and you do not mind a challenge, then this is one of the better choices you can make.
