Although racing can be described as a spectacle of speed, the truth of the matter is that braking represents a good chunk of a race too. Going faster only means that you also have to brake harder, which is why it’s so difficult for people to balance the two in order to be as fast around the circuit as possible. Thankfully, the world of video games can considerably alter this balance.

BAFL - Brakes Are For Losers is a racing game that’s about as ludicrous as its name implies, yet it still manages to be difficult and enjoyable at the same time. Thus, the goal is to race other cars across technical tracks and do so without the possibility to use the brakes in order to negotiate tough corners. The collisions are simplified, but you still get damaged in the process, so it’s better to avoid the walls.

To begin with, there are multiple game modes to choose from, depending on whether you want to take on some time attack challenges or race with the AI. You can also race with three other friends on the same computer, given the fact that the game supports up to four different controllers at once. Hence, there’s a fair bit of variety, but the gameplay is pretty similar regardless of which one you choose.

To make things more interesting, the races also include interesting power-ups that spawn around the tracks as you complete the laps. Some provide you with extra hitpoints, some allow you to speed up a little, and others destroy and stun your opponents for a few seconds. Every now and again traffic cars enter the circuit and make it very difficult to stay out of trouble.

As far as the controls are concerned, things are as simple as they can, given the fact that most of the time you just have to steer. It’s not easy to do so when you have no control over the car’s acceleration, so it takes quite a while until you are able to find your way around the circuits without wrecking your car in the process. The graphics do not impress either, but they are quite engaging most of the time.

BAFL - Brakes Are For Losers is obviously not designed for hardcore racing lovers, but it has all the right ingredient to provide casual fans with a great time. The local multiplayer has the potential to fuel your couch gaming sessions.
