Audiosurf 2 is a rhythm-based game that comes with several interesting modes and the possibility to use your music to shape the gameplay. It considerably improves over the first title and brings into focus the fact that people can create custom modes and skins to use during playtime.
Audiosurf 2 is an eye-catching game, to say the least. It’s vivid, and fast-paced nature, combined with the graphics design makes it an appealing game to play and even watch. Seriously, you can stare at the screen while someone else plays and just lose yourself.
Being a rhythm-based game, you’ll have to play according to what you listen to. A great thing about Audiosurf 2 is that it provides an audio library to enjoy, but you can also load your own music or stream from Soundcloud. The above and the fact that the game accepts modding makes it virtually impossible to get bored of it, that is if you don’t get bored with the music you listen to. Luckily, that’s in tremendous supply as well.
In Audiosurf 2 you’ll mostly be collecting colors and dodging stuff. The points and the obstacles are placed on a track according to the structure of the song you’re about to listen to, so in a way, you do play by the ear.
Audiosurf 2 doesn’t have perfect song-to-game reconstruction or level creation, and a lot of the time, you’ll notice that the song is way off sync with what’s on the screen. We’ll keep that in the area that it takes more than three lanes/signals to convey the structure of a song.
There’s not questioning that the good in Audiosurf 2 outweighs the bad. The GUI could, and should, go through some re-designing because it’s beyond basic for what the game looks like during gameplay. There are a few other things that need polishing here and there. But overall, Audiosurf 2 is a great game.
