Astro Boy: Edge of Time Demo

Galactic wars are still pretty far from being a reality for our species, although hopefully that’s not part of any plan. On the other hand, it’s tantalizing to imagine huge battles with plasma cannons and similar technologies, not to mention the fact that they probably involve multiple species. Thankfully, we can satisfy this curiosity using movies, books and video games.

Astro Boy: Edge of Time is an interesting project that features a lot of huge names from Japan and the rest of the world, including names like Goichi Suda, Hiroya Oku and Giorgio Moroder. The game is basically a CCG with a few interesting twists when it comes to gameplay mechanics, but it’s not far from what’s out there right now, except maybe for the artwork and a few minor gimmicks.

As such, you start by choosing from a handful of available factions, each one of which features different cards that can be collected. Not only that, but each faction has its  unique style, which means that some are more offensive and brutal, while others are much better at striking from a defensive position. Whichever you happen to choose, on the other hand, the skill you display during the battle is what matters the most.

The first interesting thing about the gameplay is the fact that you can place the cards on two separate lines. Thus, the one in front allows the units to attack the enemy freely, but they cannot defend the general, while the ones on the back line cannot initiate attacks, but they stand between the enemy offense and your general. It’s a neat concept, and it’s great that you can use units on any lane, regardless of their specs.

You can also cast special abilities and fortify your positions using special cards, but it all depends on your ability to play smart and outwit your opponent. Hence, it’s not always important how strong your deck is as long as you play the cards right. Lastly, the graphics look great, especially when it comes to the artwork and the way each unit is presented.

All things considered, Astro Boy: Edge of Time shows a lot of promise, but it’s definitely not there yet. The talent behind it is humongous, on the other hand, so it’s difficult to see how it might flop. Even so, the game needs your help in order to become reality, and you can show your support by backing the Kickstarter project.
