Getting a job is an important step in everyone’s life, especially since you technically train for it almost your entire life. School and college are theoretically designed to teach you everything you need to know in order to handle the conditions at your future workplace, including the actual skills you wish to pursue. However, it’s never quite that simple, since real life has a way to take you by surprise.
Artisan: Going Home Again is a role-playing game with visual novel elements and all sorts of mini-games to keep you engaged. In essence, this is a day-by-day simulation that allows you to pick a goal for your character and work your way toward it over the course of the game. Romance and friendship are also part of the equation, depending on how social you want to be.
The main character’s name is Ellie by default, but you have the freedom to change it to anything you want and make the experience a tad more personal. Many other things can be customized about her, since there are a variety of buffs and abilities you can acquire along the way to make life easier. As mentioned before, the story is all about trying to get a job as an artisan in order to stop your parents from selling your childhood home.
Every day has to be filled with activities, and you can choose these activities from a list of available mini-games. Some of these challenge you to solve puzzles, while others are a bit more on the creative side. It truly feels like you are making progress, especially since you can check up on job offers at any given time and try your luck at the interview if you think you can take it.
As for the graphics, the artists deserve some praise for the great colors and cute artwork, since everything is spot on in this regard. Moreover, you can also enjoy many different outfits, not to mention all the interesting locations you visit over the course of the story. There’s a bit of voice acting in there as well, but the main attraction is the soundtrack, which goes very well with the mood and the action on the screen.
In the end, Artisan: Going Home Again is a lot more interactive than your regular visual novel, but then again it’s more of a simplified RPG than a visual novel. Hence, the game can easily keep you busy for a few hours and make them quite pleasant as well.
