Army of Pixels

Strategy games come in all shapes and sizes. While some excel in complexity, others focus on offering a chill experience that slightly require serious thought. Army of Pixels is a strategy game with tug-of-war style combat that has two armies fighting each other.

The idea to Army of Pixels is very simple and fairly entertaining at the same time. You and your AI opponent are set at opposite ends of a linear, four-lane battlefield, and you must send units to destroy each other's defenses. Once a number of units make it into enemy territory, you are declared the victor.

It sounds easy enough but like always, there’s a catch. You never know what units the enemy will send your way or on which lane they are focused. But neither does your enemy know. It’s partially a guessing game in which you have to figure out what units to use to counter any eventual attack. Moreover, you have a finite amount of resources that you can use to purchase any of the several types of units.

Army of Pixels is still in early stages of development and while the gameplay is fairly solid, patching up and polishing is needed, and most probably on the way. For someone who has never played this type of game, it might seem a bit unbalanced if you mess up your unit composition but it gets a lot easier as you play.

There are spells to use, factions to buy and unlock and a good range of units to purchase. Army of Pixels could use an upgrade system for the units, as well as other things but we’ll let the developers figure out what’s best. It already seems to be coming along nicely.

Without a doubt, for the casual gamer, Army of Pixels will be a nice piece of entertainment. It looks nice, albeit pixel art graphics are being abused lately, it plays well, and the audio is in fact very good. Army of Pixels is worth a genuine shot.
