JRPGs are easy to recognize, given the fact that they go out of their way to look unique and stand out from the crowd. Colorful characters, extravagant hairdos and the usual 30 minutes-long cutscenes are all part of the equation and the reason so many people enjoy the genre, although it may prove to be too much to handle for a western-RPG fan.

Arcturus - The Curse and Loss of Divinity is the classic example of a JRPG, complete with every one of the aforementioned elements. In fact, the first twenty minutes of the game are actually a cutscene explaining a dozen things at once, all without giving you a hint about who you are and whom you play as. Naturally, the events become clearer as you continue playing, but the amount of information you are assaulted with in the beginning can be quite disarming.

The story itself is a convoluted mix of politics, religion, magic and the usual heroic deeds. You get to meet and play with a variety of interesting characters along the way, which gives you the chance to get acquainted with the universe. Moreover, you are free to make some choices as you go along, in order to steer the events one way or the other.

Although combat plays an important role in the game, dialogue is imperative, regardless of the situation. Hence, your character may have the possibility to advance in a variety of different skills and abilities, but each confrontation usually starts with a lengthy exchange of words between the two parties, which almost always ends with one side wishing the other a slow death.

An interesting gimmick used by the title is the blend of complete three-dimensional environments and the 2D sprites that serve as characters. The illusion is quite noticeable, but also convenient, in some way. A lot of work went into animating these sprites, especially when it comes to cutscenes and their movement around the environment. As a whole, the landscapes look charming and there is plenty of detail to observe as you go along.

Given the fact that you can choose between multiple ways to advance the story, Arcturus - The Curse and Loss of Divinity can be re-played a few times, although not much of the dialogue changes. However, if you are a true fan of the genre, that should definitely not stop you from doing so.
