Aporia was the perfect game to end this week. It’s an exploration puzzle game with a silent narrative that starts innocent enough and ends up having a messed up plot twist in only a couple of minutes.

The second thing you notice in Aporia is the presence in the HUD of a brain entangled in some thorns that can indicate that something bad has a hold of your mind. The first thing you notice in Aporia is how smooth it runs and how good everything looks, for an indie of course. As a little sidenote, running it with very high details might ravage your hardware.

Back to the thorns sticking into a brain. Being aware of that little detail, you ask yourself a series of questions in the form of, what happens if the thorns get a stronger grasp? Are there side effects? Is there a cure? How to I avoid making it worse? How much of this place is real? All of those and more will set your imagination and sense of wonder in motion. More so since the place you explore seems alien and ancient at the same time.

There are a few more very interesting things about the gameplay, but I won't mention them for the sake of keeping a few surprises alive for you to enjoy.

If there’s one thing Aporia got right in this early demo is the ambiance, the audio effects and gloomy atmosphere. It all comes together wonderfully and, well, in my case, it instantly threw me into the mood and pace of the game. That is something I’m sure most of you value.

The pace at which the character walks, how events are triggered, everything fits nicely. Another thing that you can appreciate about Aporia are the puzzles, the tasks you have to complete. Some are obvious, some not so much, but each one makes you understand something more about the world you’re in. I can’t remember the last time I was this curious to find out what else the game has instored, how it ends.

Just to be fair, Aporia has its share of some underwhelming factors. For example, having a world so well plotted to be mysterious, one in which you actually have to tread lightly, it’s a bit of a shame that you can’t fall off of a cliff or break a leg running down the stairs. I’m aware of how that sounds, but since it got this far this early, why not go the extra mile in creating a seriously tense game in which you’ll find that time is the most precious resource you have.

With extra mechanics to complicate your life or not, Aporia will be a very good indie title. There’s no doubt about that.
