Arcade racing games are designed to provide you with a good time and a challenge, but it’s not easy to get the right combination of gameplay mechanics and simple controls. Sometimes it’s all about car modifications, but other times things can be taken to the extreme in terms of speed, power-ups and the actual vehicles.
Antigraviator is an arcade racing game that challenges your ability to negotiate corners at breakneck speeds and keep up with the other racers at the same time. As you can tell from the first few minutes of gameplay, the game takes its inspiration from classics like Wipeout or F-Zero, which is not a very exploited niche at the moment. Hence, the developers have complete freedom in terms of new ideas and unusual gameplay elements.
The first gimmick that adds some excitement to the formula is the ability to trigger traps along the way, which allows you to slow down your opponents. On the other hand, it’s definitely not easy to keep track of traps and the way ahead at the same time, given the ungodly speeds you have to deal with. Thankfully, it gets easier after you learn the tracks and know what to expect.
Power-ups add even more excitement along the way, although most of them are just speed boosts that make it even more difficult to keep up with the track. The extra challenge keeps you engaged, on the other hand, depending on whether you mind putting your fingers through hell. Speaking of which, the controls are very responsive and accurate, although a gamepad is much better suited if you truly want to have complete control over the vehicle.
As far as the graphics are concerned, they are not bad at all, especially in terms of level design and special effects. Each track is set in a different environment, ranging from classic sci-fi scenes to deserts, which means that it’s unlikely to get bored. Granted, the demo at hand does not feature too many tracks, but more are promised for the full game.
In the end, every part of Antigraviator appears to be polished and well thought out, which is great news if you are a fan of the genre and you ran out of things to try. However, the project needs a bit of support in order to take off, and you can do so by participating in the game’s Kickstarter campaign.
