Superpowers are desirable when you are the only one having them, or maybe you and just a handful of other people. If everyone has some sort of special ability, then the whole thing stops being noteworthy and you are back to being an individual in a crowd. It’s not difficult to imagine how the criminals would take advantage of their powers.

Amplitude is an interactive visual novel that takes place in the year 2121 and society is very different in many regards, the most important of which is the fact that most people are mutants with superpowers. Other than the sci-fi story, the game features some unique gameplay elements as well, some of which are quite uncommon in the visual novel genre.

The story starts with the main character dying, only to wake up in the underworld. A woman greets you on the other side, but you are not ready to die yet. Thankfully, the woman in question says that you can go back to life if you choose to, although not in your own body. The twist is that besides occupying a different body, the other person also happens to be alive when you occupy it, which means that you have to share.

Although dialog is an important part of gameplay, there are other things to do once the story begins. You can choose between a male/female vessel, and you can spend your time improving skills, making friends, or just pursuing your goal. There are abilities you can master with enough practice, such as charisma and knowledge, and you can even be involved in romantic relationships.

The map is interactive as well, meaning that you are free to travel all over town and visit a variety of locations. The artwork is sublime, although you have to be a fan of the anime style. Even so, the characters are very detailed and enjoyable, not to mention the multitude of backgrounds that create a believable futuristic vibe.

All things considered, Amplitude is certainly a step above move visual novels out there, especially when it comes to gameplay and freedom of choice. If you add the multiple endings and the skill progression to that, then this can almost be called a role-playing game instead.
