Alternate worlds and realities make nice plots for movies and video games, because it allows the designers to go crazy on the environment and the rules that govern the said worlds. Interesting concepts can be born this way, but everything must at least make some kind of sense in the end, otherwise it’s just pretty stuff to look at.
Amaranthine Voyage: The Orb of Purity Collector's Edition is a casual adventure game with puzzle mechanics and the occasional hidden object sequence. Your task is to move from area to area by unlocking the way further, which is achieved by finding special items and combining them. There are many mini-games included as well, but most of them are quite obvious and simple to deal with.
Story-wise, the plot is somewhat connected to the events from previous Amaranthine Voyage episodes, in the sense that you may stumble into familiar concepts and characters. As such, you play the role of Prof. Samantha Bennett, a harmonium researcher who knows more about it than anyone. As it happens, a strange man falls through the portal she opens, and it’s up to her to save the man and stop his entire world from being destroyed.
Just like in most games of this type, you need to pay close attention to the objects around you, because everything might come in handy at some point. It is pretty simple to examine the right areas, because only those are accessible anyway. Most of the items you pick up can be used as they are, but others require fixing, or they are missing vital components to do their job properly.
Dialog is part of the story as well, but don’t expect any kind of thought-provoking conversations. In fact, you mostly have to sit and read what other characters say, because you do not have too much control in this regard. Thankfully, at least the visual quality is as pleasant as before, even if the character models are a bit deformed in certain situations and they look awkward.
In the end, Amaranthine Voyage: The Orb of Purity Collector's Edition should be just as exciting to play and beat as the rest of the episodes, at least for those who enjoyed the first ones. It may not be very complicated, but at least it puts your mind to work a little bit every now and again.
