Vicious aliens are definitely not something you want to come across, especially not on a spaceship far away from anything that even resembles home. However, if something like that does happen at some point, movies and video games usually go with the “blast them with rockets” approach and proceed to depict the heroic deeds of a common human dealing with the entire alien race.

Alien Rage is not the type of game that puts any kind of emphasis on story or character development, since it barely has any of these elements at all. Hence, your simple and single purpose throughout the main campaign is to basically shoot and eviscerate everything that moves or appears to be moving, using more powerful weapons as you advance through the alien stronghold and reach the final boss.

There is a story behind all the shooting, but it is so blurry and unremarkable it barely features five minutes of cutscenes as a whole. However, it is quite obvious that it all revolves around the asteroid mine you are exploring, since you get to thoroughly admire it as you go along and clear its every crevice of aliens. Thankfully, the developers make it clear that the story was not important and instead concentrated on the actual gameplay.

One thing that should be fairly obvious from the first few minutes into the game is that the difficulty level is not something you want to take lightly. The aliens are quite resilient to bullets and they can pinpoint your location accurately from great distances, even before you get a change to see them. Hence, you need a lot of patience and experience with hardcore FPS games, otherwise you might end up very annoyed and frustrated.

The boss battles take matters a step further and they really strain your ability to look in three places at once and press just as many keys at the same time. However, you might be glad to know that the graphics engine is truly magnificent when it comes to rendering the environment and the characters themselves, although there are some glitches and annoyances from time to time. That way, you at least get to gaze at the beautiful futuristic architecture when you repeatedly get killed by the same enemy a few dozens times.

Alien Rage is the type of game that may not be remembered in a year or two, but it can certainly leave a deep mark on some of the players through the brutal boss fights. Other than that, the pretty graphics might attract a few more people, but there is nothing else to make the title stand out from the crowd.
