Planes are not the only things that must run smoothly on an airport, since there are many more elements that need to be taken into consideration in order to have a successful airline business. Rival companies are also constantly trying to steal your customers and you have to keep up with them, by offering additional services or lower prices.
Airline Tycoon is designed in order to give you a glimpse into the backstage of airport management, by allowing you to act as a manager that needs to increase profits, attract more customers and satisfy their every need. Naturally, by doing so, you also expand your empire and become more and more powerful, which in turn enables you to acquire even more currency for your purposes.
At the start of the game, you may not amount to much, but you do get quite a bit of money to start investing into the airline. Moreover, the missions are not all about the customers, either, since some of them are actually based on your ability to do better than the other three competing CEOs, who always have the same objectives as you and they are constantly trying to outsmart you and get you fired.
The tutorial you are presented with in the beginning is more than useful, since it explains exactly what you need to do in order to complete the missions and beat your opponents. Hence, it might not be a good idea to head into the action without consulting it, since the game features quite a lot of gimmicks that are not that intuitive, if you are not aware of their purpose.
Finally, the game features an interesting graphic engine, which manages to emulate 3D environments quite well. The mechanics, however, are basic point-and-click, which means that you move around the levels by simply pointing your character into the right direction. Even if the animations are rudimentary and the customers have only around five models between them, the atmosphere is completed by the catchy tunes in the background and various other ambient sounds.
Since there are so many options that can be changed throughout the career, as well as the fact that there are four playable characters, Airline Tycoon can be easily re-played a few times, especially if you want to use different strategies or just apply the techniques you've learned in the previous playthroughs.
