It’s difficult to remain indifferent about the afterlife, especially since everyone is heading there sooner or later. Whether you choose to believe that there’s something waiting for you there or not, it’s certainly a difficult question, mainly because there’s no way to verify any claims or theories. Thus, we can only imagine and speculate on the subject, although that’s good enough to create some amazing stories.

After Life - Story of a Father is a first-person exploration game in which your goal is to explore a park and search for hidden memories. It’s a pretty straightforward formula that’s not very original at first sight, but the way the story is told is quite intriguing. On the other hand, there are some control and gameplay issues that need to be solved by the time the full game rolls out.

To begin with, the story revolves around a man by the name of Rick Dennehy, a man who died and went to the afterlife. He is not able to interact with the real world anymore, but he can see the memories of his family and understand how they felt about him when he was alive. Thus, the goal is to find certain objects around the park and examine them in order to trigger memories.

Unlike most other games that take place in nature, this one appears to feature a lot more vegetation and beautiful landscapes, which does wonders for the atmosphere. There are all sorts of trees, flowers and grass, plus a few bridges over the river and a lot of other small details like that. On the other hand, all this takes its toll on your computer, although it could probably be better with a bit of optimization.

As for the graphics themselves, the game uses Unity, so it certainly has the potential to feature exquisite special effects and nice lighting. The level design is what matters the most, however, because that can make up for weaker graphic engines most of the time. A good soundtrack would go a long way as well, but that’s not yet the case with the game at hand.

In the end, After Life - Story of a Father is not very complex yet, but it has the potential to make you think once the story is complete. As of right now, the game is only capable of making you feel relaxed and at peace, which is a pretty good compromise too.
