Arcade racing games can be quite the distraction if you are in the mood for something light and entertaining, but they can also strike back and cause you even more anguish, in case they happen to display bad controls and even worse gameplay mechanics. Luckily, these things can be quite obvious from the first few minutes inside the game and there shouldn’t be any reason to keep going if you are not satisfied.
ATV Rush is one such game and it certainly makes an impression on you from the first few moments, since it does look quite odd and unpolished. However, there is some purpose behind it and you can definitely experience a bit of innocent fun, as well as have a look around what seems to be an alien planet on which ramps grow every few meters and tall buildings are constructed in the middle of nowhere.
The first thing that might strike you as odd is the fact that the ATV you control does not have an actual driver. Hence, most of the charm is out of the picture, because seeing a driver-less vehicle perform wild stunts is not nearly as impressive or enjoyable as it would be if a human was attached to the seat. Thankfully, it wouldn’t have made any difference anyway, since the rest of the gameplay is quite bad as well.
As previously mentioned, ramps are your primary targets, since they allow you to jump and reach the circles high up in the air, which enable you to perform some wild tricks and stunts. Naturally, seeing an empty ATV do some flips is not very exciting, but you can at least pretend that you are on it and contribute to the atmosphere a little bit.
The trouble do not end with the gameplay, unfortunately, since the technical aspects are pretty awful as well. The ATV itself seems to be made of plastic, because the shaders all appear to render the same material and there are no traces of reflections or shadows. The ground is all one texture and it doesn’t even blend together to create a seamless transition, while the environments are mostly formed out of random palm trees, isolated skyscrapers and the ramps that help you reach the hoops.
ATV Rush can only be described as someone’s two-day project, since there really isn’t anything worth playing in it, regardless of how bored or open to new ideas you may be. A lot of work is needed in order for it even be classified as a game, since everything needs to be improved, redone or just dropped.
