Up until recently, very few people married out of love, especially when it came to the rich blue bloods and the royal families. Hence, everyone was out to get together with someone who can provide them with extra wealth or political power, but even the lower classes usually married out of obligation instead of love.
A Midsummer Night's Choice is a text-based role-playing game in which you play the role of a young man or woman who must run away from home instead of marrying the person your father picked for you. In case you are not familiar with the genre, it’s worth noting that you do not get the chance to see any kind of artwork or do any actual playing, so most of your time is spent reading and making decisions.
However, even this can be very exciting if you enjoy reading, especially since the story is entirely in your hands from start to finish. As such, it all begins when your father, The Duke, tries to marry you with someone you don’t particularly like. Hence, you decide to run away and start anew on your own, and the journey is much more difficult than what you thought at first.
A Midsummer Night's Choice is a very open game, in the sense that you can alter the story in every possible way with your choices. Thus, you have the liberty to choose a name for your character and decide his or her personality in the beginning. After that, each scene contains multiple solutions, and it’s up to you to decide how the events transpire.
Same sex relationships are possible as well, although can also decide to remain alone throughout your journey. Many other things affect the final outcome, and you can obviously replay the experience multiple times in order to reach other endings. However, you need to be prepared to deal with the lack of visual aids, as well as with the non-existent soundtrack, which is a bit of a bummer.
All things considered, A Midsummer Night's Choice is obviously not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you are a casual player with nothing to do on a lazy afternoon, this could easily eat up a few hours of your time, and you won’t feel like they’ve been wasted either.
