A Golden Wake is a classic point and click adventure title developed by Grundislav Games and published by Wadjet Eye Games.
The point and click adventure games are among the oldest genres that are still around even after so many years, so it’s not really surprising that they are still being made. On the other hand, it is surprising to see new games that have the graphics and the feeling of a game that would have been more suited for the entertainment market from a quarter of a century ago.
A Golden Wake is that kind of game, with a strange vibe about it. Most of the time you feel that you’re playing some kind of remake or maybe something in an emulator, but no, it’s a modern title made by people who love 16-bit. It’s like the 8-track tape that refuses to die 40 years year later.
Point and click adventures follow a pretty simple recipe, meaning that you get a character that talks with everyone, figures out some puzzles, and concludes the story. It’s not a big deal, but somehow many developers somehow miss the point about this genre. It’s about the story and the dialogues, not about the puzzles themselves.
The people who made A Golden Wake seem to know this. We follow the adventures of a young guy named Alfie Banks who just arrives in Miami and who’s looking to strike it rich in the real estate market. He journeys takes him to unknown places, and it’s a joy to see who is he going to meet next and what are they going to talk about.
If we take the graphics out of the picture and remember that it’s a game for people who want this, then we can only surmise that A Golden Wake is actually a pretty solid adventure game with some interesting concepts. For example, players have access to a map of the city, with lots of levels opened at the same time.
The demo version is not very long, but it oozes originality, and it’s worth trying if only to see how games used to be back “in the day.”
