Who Must Die

Doctors hold a lot of power over regular people, mainly because health is not something we are willing to argue about with someone who is better trained than we are. Just like everyone else, on the other hand, they can make mistakes, especially when it comes to diagnostics. As such, things get pretty nasty if a doctor mistakes your disease for something else and gives you the wrong treatment.

Who Must Die is a very interesting puzzle game in which your goal is to look at some monitors and try to figure out which one of your patients is contaminated with a dangerous disease. In order to get a more accurate portrayal of their symptoms, you can use various stimuli and watch their reactions. The gameplay is very simple and easy to understand, but it’s quite difficult to figure out the right answer.

Each patient reacts in a certain way to the stimuli you send using the control panel. It should also be noted that your character is not actually a doctor, just a guy who’s replacing the doctor. In the end, the game’s goal is for you to make a decision and kill the patient you think is contaminated, although it is also possible to kill yourself if it seems like the riddle has no clear answer.

As far as the actions you have at your disposal, it is possible to play calm or hard music, fill the room with exciting gas, or turn off the lights. You also have a guardian on duty, but he’s not very responsive to your commands. In case you don’t feel like killing the chosen patient yourself, it is also possible to just send the guardian to do it for you, as long as he is at his post.

Visually, the game uses Unreal Engine 4 to render the environments, but there’s not that much to see, other than the monitors and a few buttons. On the other hand, the monitors display actual real life footage recorded by the developers, which adds an extra layer of creepiness to it all. Their symptoms and reactions are randomized for each playthrough as well, so you can enjoy the experience multiple times.

As long as the developers keep adding content and refining the mechanics a little bit, Who Must Die is bound to become a hit with the crowds. The idea has just the right combination of ingenuity and craziness, which is exactly what gamers want most of the time.
