Tracks

Many of us enjoyed playing with toy train sets when we were younger, and some have even turned this fascination with trains into a hobby as we got older. Thankfully, there are plenty of simulators that offer a much cheaper alternative to expensive model train sets.

Tracks is a fun game that, while still in development, has a lot to offer. It enables you to design tracks using a simple editor, and you can then ride along them in a wooden toy train. It comes with limited content at present, but it shows a lot of promise.

We have to say that we were impressed by the track editor, as adding or removing segments is remarkably easy. You just need to select the end of the track, look in the direction you want it to go, and then click the left mouse button.

The camera is also very easy to control, using the WASD keys for direction and CTRL/SPACE to manage height. The track can go up or down, so you can even create bridges and ramps for your train to navigate.

After completing your design, you can switch to Train mode and step into the shoes of a virtual engineer. The two levers in the cabin allow you to control the train’s speed and course, but you can also switch to the overhead mode at any time.

Unfortunately, only a single type of train is available, and no carriages. Also, while the physics are quite impressive, enabling you to make jumps between track segments, the trains do not interact with furniture.

From a visual standpoint, Tracks looks clean and crisp, and we feel that the minimalistic design was a great choice. However, we would have preferred to have a few more environments to choose from.

You should keep in mind that this game is still in active development, and a lot of new features are due to be added soon. Nevertheless, Tracks can provide you with a very enjoyable experience even in its current state. It may lack some polish, and it offers a limited amount of content, but it is a title that train enthusiasts should not ignore.
