Indie game fans, this is your TIE Fighter, and it’s called Space Combat. It’s open source thus a totally free game that lets you pilot 11 ships in the vastness of space where you can take on a wide range of missions.

Space Combat features graphics that are just above those of the classic TIE Fighter in the sense that they are simple and well used. Visually, this title might not be appealing but as far as indie games go, it’s pretty good.

The game features three factions, the Spacers, Terrans and Pirates, all pitched in a war for survival and dominance. You’ll get to be in the pilot shoes for each one and get to experience flying different ships and embarking on various kinds of assignments. Space Combat features a decent amount of narration for your missions and, even though, the speech is generated using software, it sounds ok.

Space Combat comes with over 70 missions to engage in, each one with its own setting and plot. Gameplay might seem a bit repetitive at times but that’s the beauty of open source games. If you have some coding skills by your side, you can easily create your own missions, campaigns and even devise more complex AI.

There is a lot you can do with and in Space Combat if you’re up to the challenge. In most part, Space Combat is meant for those who are either passionate about flying space fighters or those who need a solid base to practice and perfect their coding and game design skills.

On a closing note, Space Combat is a nice game despite its appearance. However, that’s also part of its charm. More so, if you don't like something about it, you’re free to change it anytime you want to.
