Time travel is a concept that technically does not violate the laws of physics, at least not as we currently understand them. Hence, it’s theoretically possible to go forward or backward in time, and it actually happens all the time with subatomic particles, which is where the Quantum Mechanics laws start to make sense. However, it’s difficult to imagine how they would work on a macroscopic scale.
The Time Traveler is a top-down role-playing game in which you play the role of a boy going on a daring mission with his friend, when all of a sudden it all goes wrong. As far as the gameplay as a whole is concerned, there are no original ideas involved, but the experience is quite fun nonetheless. In fact, there are many ways to enjoy the adventure if you do not mind replaying it multiple times.
As such, the story starts with the two friends attempting to break into a witch’s house. Not only do they try, but they also succeed, except that it doesn’t go as planned after they find themselves inside. Hence, the witch catches one of them and destroys him, which is why you must find a way to travel through time and save your friend from being killed.
When it comes to the gameplay, there’s really not much to it, except exploration and the occasional object interaction. There are also a few mini-games you have to tackle along the way, such as when you need to lockpick something in order to gain access through a door. On the other hand, such moments are quite rare, especially since you are always interrupted by some kind of cutscene.
As for the graphics, the top-down perspective limits the amount of detail that can be found in the environments and the objects, but the game world still looks very sharp and nice. The level design is pretty inspired as well, even if there’s nothing too engaging about the maps or the world itself. The sound effects are nothing out of the ordinary either, but at least they are not annoying.
In the end, The Time Traveler still misses a lot of elements in order to be considered a good game, but it can still provide you with a good time if you give it a chance. However, you shouldn’t expect too much, especially in the story department.
