The Settlers Online is one game that got a lot of hate and love throughout its life. There are good reasons for both happening but before you can actually part with any opinion, we recommend you try it out. Keep in mind that this is, in essence, a browser game, so don’t expect too much from it.
First off, it’s good because it’s based on the original Settlers game. It looks great, the animations are perfect for a game of this nature, and the game unfolds at a steady to slow pace, giving new players plenty of time to accommodate themselves to everything it has to offer.
As far as content goes, there’s more than enough to keep you busy. Your time with The Settlers Online won’t end when you unlock the final building or buy the last unowned item from the merchants. No, there’s exploring, trading, resource management, fighting and the list can go on. However, following up on the list is when you start to notice the freemium side of the game.
The bad? Well, it’s freemium. Most browser games have a knack at ruining experiences after a few days of playing. It remains to be seen if that applies to The Settlers Online as well because so far, it’s moving along a lot slower than other games that share in gameplay similarities.
People complain about the pay to win and freemium aspects of a game, any game for that matter. Regardless of whether it’s a platformer or a collectible card game, people need to understand that that’s how that game is supposed to work. If some games absurdly abuse that business plan, then they deserve all the hate.
In The Settlers Online, this aspect seems to be on a leash and might not bite people’s legs as they keep logging in to play. Nonetheless, you could expect some unpleasant surprises after you invest a few hundred hours into the game. Bottom line, if you want to play Settlers, then go play Settlers, this is The Settlers Online, a browser game. It comes with pros and cons.
I haven’t spent a lot of time with The Settlers Online, but those few hours passed by quickly and in a pleasant way. Part of that is thanks to the way it looks and sounds. It all comes together to form a peaceful experience, and the user interface is well-made.
Although not much has been said about the game itself, it’s time to conclude. The Settlers Online is a game about exploring and finding out for yourself about what it has to offer. It’s a freemium game that might get unpleasant, but it’s enjoyable to play, the kind that gets addictive fast.
