Collectible card games are quite popular nowadays, since you only need to think about Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone to realize how big the audience really is. There are many others as well, although some are just clones trying to capitalize on the subject and make a quick buck. As long as the mechanics are fluid and the gameplay balanced, on the other hand, it’s all about taste and personal preference in the end.
Star Crusade CCG is a multiplayer strategy game that uses decks of cards instead of real units, much like Hearthstone did with the WarCraft franchise. In fact, this looks and plays a lot like Hearthstone, because even the interface and the general gameplay mechanics are the same. However, the theme is entirely different, given the fact that it features alien species and all sorts of sci-fi notions.
There are multiple factions to choose from when you decide to create a deck, each one of which focuses on a specific tactic. While the Consortium uses stealth and mercenaries to fight their battles, the Annunaki take advantage of powerful physiques to inflict a lot of damage on their foes. Obviously, it is up to you to choose the right combination of units and employ them during multiplayer matches.
Because the game is designed to be enjoyed in multiplayer almost exclusively, the matches need to be short enough not to get boring. Players that are familiar with Hearthstone should feel right at home with Star Crusade CCG as well, because the same concepts apply. You start with one action point in the first round, and the amount increases in increments of one after every round.
Each card costs a certain amount of action points to be played, and the cards are automatically awarded from your deck at the beginning of each turn. This means that there is a luck element to the formula, which might not sit well with most CCG fans out there. Even so, you can still apply a variety of strategies during the matches, at least if you are lucky enough to draw the right units.
Star Crusade CCG’s greatest strength is the fact that it takes place in a sci-fi universe, which is a nice change from classics like MTG and Hearthstone. However, the gameplay and the experience is not nearly as complex, which is why hardcore CCG fans won’t find the challenge they are looking for.
