It’s safe to say that everybody likes music, even if some are more enthusiastic fans out there that go the extra mile to fuel their passion. Hence, you can find all sorts of fandoms and groupies that have transcended the fan label a long time ago, and this usually happens in the case of huge bands or renowned singers. Thus, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there are video games about bands as well.
Pyramaze: The Game is an action-platformer based on the progressive power metal band Pyramaze, in which you get to go on a dangerous adventure as one of the band members. They each have different abilities that come in handy during battles, so you can re-play the game multiple times and tackle the challenges in a different way every time.
There are five members to choose from, and they all have weapons and abilities designed to mimic their role in the band. Hence, Terje uses his microphone as a hammer to create shockwaves and blast enemies apart, while Jonah takes his Keytar to a whole other level by using it as a blade. On the other hand, it’s worth noting that the gameplay mechanics are not very refined.
Speaking of which, the game is clearly designed with action in mind, because you are always jumping and killing enemies. However, some of the characters have very slow and inaccurate attacks, which are difficult to use when you are assaulted by multiple enemies at once. To make things worse, the controls feel a bit clunky as well, at least in regards to movement and jumping.
Lastly, the graphics are nothing to write home about either, given the fact that most of the artwork is very basic and disappointing. It’s also difficult to see enemies due to environmental obstacles sometimes, which adds even more frustration to the mix. Thankfully, at least the soundtrack is exciting, at least if you are a fan of Pyramaze and this specific genre of music.
In the end, Pyramaze: The Game is clearly not the kind of game people will remember for years to come, but it may be a great way for the fans of the band to have some fun. The challenge may also attract a few hardcore platformer fans.
