Project Maiden is one of the better free indie games that has surfaced in the last months. It’s developer, Kevin Cole, describes it as a “narrative focused, puzzle-platformer where you must lose your powers to progress”, but that doesn’t give any hints about what the game is as an experience.

Project Maiden begins with a silent, self-taught, tutorial in which you get to familiarize yourself with the core mechanics of the character. In all honesty, it seemed dull, a bit too simple in design and if you’re not just a bit patient with it, you’d think that it’s another basic indie platformer.

A few minutes in, the game starts with a short and profound exchange between Imogen and an entity in some kind of Purgatory. None of it makes any immediate sense, but that’s generally a feature of good games. What you can’t understand leaves room for pleasant narrative surprises.

The game unfolds at a rather slow pace, but exploring the world you’ll be put face to face with environments in which you do something different every time. Sure, a lot of the time it’s about climbing this or that, but every path is different, you never feel as if Project Maiden is a slave to linear gameplay.

Behind the old-school look lies an indie title with solid gameplay that surpasses a lot of its competition. It’s not just that the female character can smash through walls, launch fireballs and ‘bend’ earth to its advantage, she is just full of surprises throughout the entire game.

Depending on what power or weapon you use, Imogen has a different fighting style and mastering each one takes a bit of time. With a sword it’s one thing, punches are another. Sometimes you can burn your enemy to a crisp using fire and then smash them to bits with your fists. There is a lot to discover in Project Maiden, and all of it is well-crafted and implemented.

Project Maiden’s story is another ‘selling’ point. It’s great to play a game in which you have no idea of where it will take you. And it’s even better when it challenges you with gameplay that gets your mind going and sets your imagination free.
