Pit of Arcade

Pit of Arcade is exactly what its title says it is. You play as a pig, dog, three other famous guys from the gaming world and your job is to escape a never-ending pit of arcade games. In it, you have Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Frogger, Mario, Asteroids and more.

Most of the time you’ll see the games above in their own retro style recreations but in this case, the developer went on a different direction. Pit of Arcade is an Indie vs. Gamers jam build and once you get what the event is about, you’ll have a better understanding of the game.

You start by choosing a character, with some nice picks at hand, and try to reach the top of the pit of arcade games you find yourself in. It seems pretty simple and given the fact that it’s a Flash-like game, that first feeling gets empowered. However, regardless of how cute it is, the game is a dead serious challenge for who plays it.

Pit of Arcade uses the combined annoyances of the classic games to offer a collective challenge. And that idea works to its full effect. You have to dodge the ball from Pong, shoot the Invaders, watch out for the ghosts from Pac-Man and helplessly look at the dogs from Duck Hunt snicker as you try to do your best.

For the retro game fan, seeing all those titles mashed into one challenging and fun to play game will be a treat. The randomness of the enemies you encounter is also applied to the power-ups you collect. Some of them are very useless.

On a closing note, Pit of Arcade is a very good entry for the jam and a really nice treat for the casual gamer. It looks nice, it plays even better, and it certainly offers a challenge.
