Paranoia 2: Savior is a first-person action game that has you playing as a soldier who is tasked to explore and uncover the dark secrets of a soviet laboratory. Long time abandoned, the lab holds plenty of gruesome details about experiments that were meant to bind humans and animals to machines to create some sort of army. It’s going to be an interesting journey.
Right off the bat, Paranoia 2: Savior feels a lot like Half-Life, but a much better looking version of it. For an indie game, Paranoia 2 looks excellent. Some textures are kind of rubbish but the most part of world design is just wonderful.
The rooms, hallways, warehouses, and every piece of confined space is built to create an atmosphere that makes you feel uneasy. Paranoia 2: Savior aims to be a horror game and for that the audio effects are also very well chosen.
In terms of theme, everything about Paranoia 2: Savior fits together. The game is narrated in Russian but switching the subtitles to English allows you to enjoy the dialogue and the entire story without affecting plot comprehension. Be gentle with its flaws, the good outweighs the bad
When it comes to gameplay, Paranoia 2: Savior is your standard first-person shooter with a horror setting. You walk around dark and eerie places, shoot anything that moves and is hostile and gather every piece of mission info you need. Gameplay is linear but the settings always change and you do feel that you are going deeper into the danger that is upon you.
Visually, the game is above average, it is to be appreciated but there are certain setbacks. Using the right-click aim with focus is a bit weird because you have to wait a bit before the target becomes clear. It’s a great thing that the team behind Paranoia 2: Savior worked on implementing it but it does need a bit more work.
The AI sometimes moves and acts strange and the ammo count in the HUD might disappear, Paranoia 2: Savior does have its share of flaws. However looking at the bigger picture, it’s a pretty big game and most of the stuff that’s in it is good.
On a closing note, Paranoia 2: Savior might send mixed signals at first for both gameplay and graphics but give it a shot. It gets a whole lot better as you dive deeper into the story.
