Certain games manage to create quite a hype around them during the development stage, usually because the creators are trying to attract as much attention as possible to their upcoming production. However, sometimes the gamers are just as excited about the games in question, which is when the letdown is that much more painful.

DMCA's Sky is a funny little game that’s basically a combination of 2D platformer elements and No Man’s Sky, albeit on a much smaller scale. As such, the main gimmick is that the levels you play on are actually spherical, and you can jump into your spaceship at any time in order to travel to another planet. It’s a great idea in theory, but the game itself needs more content to remain fun for more than a few minutes.

Each planet features a different color theme, although there are only so many combinations one can obtain. The level layout is different as well, but not very much so, which is why the game gets repetitive after the first few minutes of gameplay. It would be nice to see more variety in this regard, especially since the game is about exploration.

There’s not much purpose to the whole gameplay aspect, which is a bit of a bummer, given the fact that the concept could have been expanded a lot with the addition of multiple planets. In essence, the only goal is to stomp goombas and visit as many planets as you can before your lives run out, after which you take it from the top. It’s fun at first, but it gets very repetitive in a rush.

As for the graphics, there’s nothing to truly impress you, especially since the colors are very basic and not as exotic as in No Man’s Sky. On top of that, the level design is pretty disappointing as well, not to mention the fact that the space between planets is actually entirely blank. Thus, it certainly needs a lot of work in this regard.

In the end, DMCA's Sky is not quite there yet, but for a game that technically pokes some fun at a triple-A production, it is quite nicely done. Thus, it can provide you with quite a bit of fun, at least if you are understanding of its flaws.
