Although it may not be the first thing to come to your mind when you think about Super Mario, the games in that era were a lot more difficult than today. Platformers required good coordination and lightning-fast reflexes in some cases, because the levels were usually packed with traps and ditches to fall into, not to mention the enemies that wanted a piece of you.
Mario Danger Forest is a modern remake of the same experience, only it doesn’t really have a story going in the background and there are no actual enemies you have to deal with. Instead, the main goal is to reach the end of the levels as fast as possible and avoid the multitude of traps on the way there. The faster you do it, the bigger the score you receive at the end.
In essence, the game feels and even looks a lot like a cross between Super Mario and Angry Birds, especially when it comes to the visual style and the scoring system. As such, depending on the number of points you manage to score, you are awarded stars. However, you can pass the levels and fail to win any stars at all, but it certainly won’t feel like a victory.
Although Mario can perform the famous double jump and get out of sticky situations, some of the sections throughout the levels are simply not reachable without a bit of help. When that happens, there is usually a trampoline around that can give you the impulse you need. Naturally, you still need to pay attention, because you can easily miscalculate the jumps and miss the ground entirely.
One of the negative aspects concerning the game is the fact that it is entirely too short to provide you with any long-term entertainment. In fact, with a bit of luck and experience with the genre, you can be done with all the levels in about fifteen minutes, which is annoying. However, it might take you a bit longer than that if you intend on getting the maximum number of stars for each stage.
In the end, Mario Danger Forest may be too short and not very challenging in most cases, but the experience should at least feed your nostalgia and provide you with a fun couple of minutes. Hence, if you are a fan of the franchise and you fancy a bit of relaxation, this can be a good way to achieve that.
