Video games can sometimes have a tremendous impact on someone’s mood, regardless of whether it’s a positive or a negative impact. The same is true for any kind of art form that tells a story, because stories have the power to awaken memories in people. However, they must be told in the right manner, otherwise the message might not be clear enough to trigger an emotional response.
Little Room is not your typical game, at least not from a gameplay point of view. It features mechanics that have been extinct ever since text-based adventure game were around, but it should be of little consequence in the grand scheme of things. In essence, this is a game that encourages you to dream and enjoy your life as much as possible.
It all begins in a room with a clock, a plant and a window. Not much is known about the main character, and it fact it would seem like she doesn’t know very much about herself either. Your goal is to look around the room and find a way to more forward, which is actually a recurring theme in the game. To do so, you have to type specific commands in the text box and wait for the results.
There’s even a puzzle to tackle, although it’s not exactly a difficult one. The key is to observe the environment and pay attention to the symbols, which shouldn’t take you all that long. Other than that, most of the experience revolves around emphasizing with the main character and realizing that life is maybe not as gray as you see it, at least not all the time.
The graphics are quite basic as well, but they are certainly pretty and moody, even if half the screen is usually occupied by white text on black background. It’s not a memorable visual experience, but that wasn’t the point of the game anyway. However, the soundtrack is great, and it goes very well with the story.
All things considered, Little Room has what it takes to change your mood in a matter of minutes, which much more than can be said for many other games. Hence, if you are feeling a bit down and need something to pick you up, this can certainly do the trick.
