Right off the bat, Kingdom Wars is a risky thing to come by if you’re a fan of real-time strategy who wants to take things into the online massively multiplayer zone. It is an MMORTS that features three unique races, large scale combat, 3D environments, tons of things to build, buy and so on, all of which make it appealing, especially since it’s free to play.

Kingdom Wars definitely had its start from the idea of one of those mobile/browser strategy games in which you have a base template and according to the resources you have, you can build stuff, train units and conquer other players. However, it added the most important thing, the freedom to control your armies and actually give it a strategy feel.

This game certainly has a lot on its plate right from the get go. It tries to balance decent RTS combat, economy and castle building into a 3D game that’s free and accessible to anyone who has a modest computer. Having that into perspective it’s easy to understand why it doesn’t have top notch graphics or impeccably polished gameplay. It’s a big game, it needs a lot of work.

Kingdom Wars is in most part a good game. It actually comes really close to creating an online environment where RTS fans can challenge and be challenged. The game also covers almost all the important aspects of the genre, then wraps and delivers them with decent graphics.

On the downside, it needs huge amounts of polishing. We get that it’s a big game but over the years, because it’s been around for a few of them, it seems that it hasn’t gotten very far. Unit movement and user-game interaction glitches are a bit too common, combat sometimes freezes and you really won’t like to see that during a siege some of your units just won’t want to move.

Kingdom Wars has acceptable design when it comes to the environment and units, but the HUD is just unacceptable. There are surely fans of the game out there that can create better looking graphics for the menus, windows, icons and so on. It’s little things like this that take away from Kingdom Wars’ potential, of which it has tremendous amounts.

For an RTS, it’s not bad at all. Combat makes sense, the units are standard to the genre, balancing is adequate, tactics are present and actually make a difference, and so forth. While gathering resources and building it’s fun, very enjoyable, but like the browse/mobile similar games, be prepared for when ‘Batte Protection’ expires. There’s a chance that your neighbours might show up with an army half your size but four times the level and wipe you out with frustrating ease.

Kingdom Wars is not perfect, and it in fact might be far from it but it is something that is worth a shot. Improvements can always be implemented, visuals improved and the gameplay re-balanced. Play it for the experience and hopefully it will be a good one.
