Sandbox games such as Minecraft are extremely popular nowadays, because they allow the players complete freedom when it comes to exploring the environments and choosing the desired course of action. However, they are not that much fun in multiplayer, because they do not have the proper mechanics to make confrontation interesting, unless building wood huts together can be considered fun.
King Arthur's Gold is a different kind of experience, on the other hand, because it features everything you might need to make a PvP match incredibly fun. As such, the core concept revolves around being able to build your own fortress and trying to destroy the enemy’s, but matches can get a lot wilder than that. Adding the fact that up to 64 players can join a match at the same time, things are bound to be interesting.
Since everything is in 2D, don’t expect the same depth as in Minecraft or any other similar titles, because the maps are small, there is no real crafting system, and the combat is basic. However, all of these elements combined make for some hilarious situations, not to mention the fact that there are so many strategies you can put into practice once enough players have joined your side.
To make things more interesting, there are three characters you can pick, depending on what you want your role during the match to be. Hence, the knight is perfect for close combat, because he also carries a shield to protect him from damage. On the other hand, archers are vital as well, as long as you know how to properly aim the bow and deal a lot of damage. Lastly, builders are responsible for building the fortresses, so they cannot miss either.
Each class has a few other abilities as well, which come in handy during various moments. As an example, the archer has a grappling hook you can use to move quickly through the air. However, the minimalistic graphics can make it difficult to see where you’re going, because things are sometimes a bit too small to see properly. Thankfully, you get used to it after a while.
All things considered, King Arthur's Gold is definitely a title worthy of a shot, especially if you enjoy sandbox games and multiplayer action. While it may take you a while to catch onto the basics, everything gets much easier after a few hours of gameplay.
