Heroes & Generals is a first-person shooter that takes a big bite out of the World War II scene. You’re left to run through the forests in daring assaults, drive tanks and fly planes to win small battles in the hopes of ending the war victorious. But since this is an MMO FPS, the end is nowhere in sight so it’s battle after battle after battle.

Heroes & Generals is offered as a free to play game and to be honest that tends to make a lot of people hesitant. You know how things work, when it’s ftp in a lot of cases it’s pay to win so why bother. Well, you should.

Visually, the game offers above decent graphics and effects and when it comes to the audio, it’s actually very good, full of clear crisp sounds. As for the gameplay, it’s very easy to learn and master and once you familiarize yourself with the behavior of the weapons, you can start working your way up the military ranks.

From an atmosphere point of view, Heroes & Generals feels right. Running through the dark forests is disorientating, shots are heard from all around, projectiles fly past you and the music takes a turn for the epic when things get tough. Once in a while you can even hear a fellow soldier whistle to let you know that he’s got his hands on a bike and that he’s willing to give you a lift to the battleground.

Heroes & Generals is in most part a good to great game but this really depends on personal taste. Since you can’t make the perfect free to play game, H&G has plenty of balancing issues, matchmaking concerns and other things that tend to mess with the enjoyment factor.

At times you’ll be in a team that slices through the opposing force like a bullet through butter while in other battles you’ll be run down like you’re made out of paper. Those will be the moments when you start to consider the pay to win factor and things might go downhill from there. However, keep in mind that the better you get the better you do and that always makes games worth the effort.

If you’re into all things WWII, Heroes & Generals might be a pleasing MMO experience. It looks good, gameplay is solid, there are a few bugs here and there but overall it’s a decently polished game.

The fact that you can fight your way up the chain of command and end up as a general who overlooks the battlefield and devises strategies is something different and interesting.
