Role-playing games are designed to be as immersive as possible, since the whole point is to play a role and forget about yourself. Granted, not all games manage to get the combination right, which is why very few of them are memorable in any way. On the other hand, it is also possible to enjoy an RPG for the combat aspect and not care about anything else.
Forge of Gods (RPG) is a simple, yet effective and addictive role-playing game designed to keep your fingers occupied and your mind wandering. It’s not a marvel of engineering, and nothing about its lore could help you imagine yourself as a part of a different universe, but the combat is pretty rewarding. On the other hand, it gets repetitive in a rush, especially if you are expecting a challenge.
The game plays like a sidescrolling clicker, which is not much of a compliment. You have a party of creatures that has to move from left to right and kill everything in between, while also collecting the treasure and the gold casually lying on the road. Most of your time is spent clicking on the same button in order to attack or move, so it’s no wonder that monotony sets in rather quickly.
You can also cast a few special abilities and use some items along the way, but those are pretty rare occasions, so there’s no actual strategy involved. The only thing you have to watch out for is the formation of your party, because you’ll sometimes have to move units around to cover exposed lanes. Speaking of which, these units can be upgraded between missions, especially if you want to tackle the tougher quests.
The graphics are quite nice from an artistic point of view, in the sense that the artwork is decent and the creatures are quite detailed. On the other hand, the game was clearly designed for the mobile market from the start, especially since everything from gameplay to the control scheme points to that. It shouldn’t be too much of an impediment, on the other hand, at least if you are just in it for the fun.
In the end, Forge of Gods (RPG) is not the kind of game you’ll be playing or remembering for years to come, but you can have a lot of fun with it for a while. It features enough content to keep you engaged for several hours.
