Most platformers rely on bright colors and silly environments to create a relaxing experience for the players, but that may not always be what gamers want. Back in the day, franchises like Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog ruled the console world, and those take place in the most colorful universes ever. However, there were different games out there as well.
Faxanadu 2 is an indie production that is actually a remake of an old platformer first released on the Famicom and NES consoles back in the day. Right off the bat, you shouldn't expect too much complexity or content, because this is merely a demonstration and it barely contains any action at all, except for some short levels. However, you do get to admire the same visual style and make use of the same mechanics.
The original game did not give too many details regarding the story and the main character either, but the one at hand doesn’t even mention it at all. Hence, you are stuck playing with an unknown man while you explore a weird world filled with ruins. Monsters and enemies should make progress more difficult, but they haven’t been implemented yet, so you are pretty much safe.
The game’s mechanics are about as classic as they can get, because you can jump, climb ladders and punch. However, there are some RPG elements thrown into the mix as well, since your character can theoretically also equip different weapons, use magic, or even make use of a shield during combat. Naturally, these options are only cosmetic in the game at hand as well.
One of the most interesting characteristics of the game is the visual style, because the color scheme is very different from what was usual back in the day. Hence, instead of the usual rainbow of colors that was the norm, you get to look at a lot of brown and orange, as well a bit of green every now and again. In essence, this can create the proper atmosphere to go along with the ruins where the action takes place.
All things considered, Faxanadu 2 is indeed barely a demo, but it’s not very interactive as of right now. Hence, although the game it takes its inspiration from has enough interesting elements to offer, a lot more work is needed to make this product a complete game worthy of your time.
