Decimated

As far as movies and video games are concerned, it’s only a matter of time until a zombie apocalypse of sorts is going to rain down upon us. Whether they are going to move slowly and disintegrate as they walk, but for some reason manage to catch and turn everyone, or they are going to be fast and vicious like in World War Z, that has yet to be predicted by the entertainment industry.

Decimated is a simple video game developed by an independent studio, which aims to portray humanity’s struggle in the face of total annihilation by a virus that turns people into vicious mutants. Your role is to protect the living and try to kill as many of them as you can, while also trying to stay alive and away from the creatures that seem to crave human flesh more than anything else.

To begin with, it is worth noting that the game seems to follow a modern path when it comes to the main campaign, because the missions emulate titles like Call of Duty and similar games. As such, beside the fact that you have to walk across the levels and kill everything that moves, there are also special missions in which you have to fly helicopters, defend an objective, or even fight other people.

While you should obviously not expect too much complexity when it comes to the gameplay mechanics, you can appreciate the effort that went into making the game feel as challenging as possible, at least in some regards. As an example, most of the guns hold very few bullets and you must use them wisely in order to eliminate the enemy, otherwise you might have to fall back on the pistol, which is not very efficient. Thankfully, that one at least comes with infinite ammo.

From a technical point of view, the game is quite basic and not at all flashy, not even from an artistic point of view. The drawings are crude and simple, while the special effects lack that extra kick that inspires life into other similar 2D games. However, the graphics are not bad either, because you can at least make out what’s happening and get a general idea regarding the state of the world during a crisis of this proportions.

While Decimated may have a fair amount of flaws and mistakes in its composition, it is clear that the developers worked really hard to include many different elements in the game. Hence, despite its apparent simplicity, Decimated gets pretty addictive and exciting after a while.
