There are many ways a video game can take you by surprise, especially when it comes to how the gameplay mechanics work. It’s usually quite the thrill to find out that you can interact with a variety of objects throughout the levels, because it makes you feel like you have complete freedom to act as you please. This effect is that much more pronounced in first-person games as well.

ColorCubes looks pretty normal at first, but things take a pretty wild turn after a few minutes. While this is pretty much a puzzle game with cubes and colors, it might be a while until you understand how the gameplay mechanics work and how to solve the puzzles. Granted, you can check up the official website for explanations, but it’s a lot more fun to experiment by yourself.

As such, the levels are quite devoid of any interesting objects, although the level design itself is quite eccentric in some regards. However, your job is to advance from one area to the other and unlock cool music tracks in the process. In order to advance, you must figure out how the cubes work and what role does color have in the grand scheme of things.

The controls are fairly simple as well, since you only need to use the classic WASD keys and the mouse to look around, plus a few other keys for things like object interaction and sprinting. However, it can be tricky to move cubes around, because the interaction component is a bit unpredictable sometimes. Hence, you might not be able to pick up cubes when you want to, or they might even disappear entirely if you make sudden movements.

As far as the visual presentation is concerned, you can rest assured knowing that the game is very handsome, at least when it comes to the level design as a whole and the post-processing effects. Unreal Engine 4 does its job beautifully, and you don't need a super-PC either, although that’s probably because most levels are textureless and with barely any objects.

In the end, ColorCubes is a well-executed concept and a smooth experience, although it lacks the content to be called an actual game. However, it speaks volume in regards to the developer’s skills, and it would be great to see more stuff like this in the future. You can see more from the developer on his official website, or by following his Twitter feed.
