Fantasy worlds are never at peace for more than a few days before two tribes, races or factions declare war again. Naturally, that’s the whole point of a fantasy world, because the writers have the liberty to include all sorts of interesting conflicts. On the other hand, the gimmick gets old after a while, since everyone is bored of the endless hatred between elves and orcs.
Clover Tale is a match three game in which you have to complete quests for a variety of characters in order to gain items and help the said characters protect their home. The gameplay mechanics are not very different from every other match-3 game out there, but the experience feels a bit more engaging, probably because you are free to tackle quests in the desired order and explore the map a little bit.
The story revolves around a place called the Nifflings’ Valley, which was a happy and quiet place until not long ago. However, a terrible darkness is approaching the valley, which is why you are called into action to help the inhabitants avoid total destruction. You can also complete a few less important quests that provide you with extra items and currency.
Your character relies on energy in order to complete the said quests, so it’s important that you keep an eye on it before you start a mission. Although it automatically replenishes when you level up or perform a few other special actions, you can also replenish it by spending real money on the game, since the free-to-play model includes in-app purchases as well.
As for the graphics, everything is as colorful as you would expect from a casual game, but that doesn’t mean it looks bad either. In fact, the map is quite interesting, although it’s not very memorable. There are some rudimentary animations as well, plus a relaxing soundtrack playing in the background to keep you in a good mood at all times.
When it’s all said and done, Clover Tale can certainly keep you busy for a while, especially since it features a plethora of quests and missions. However, the gameplay can get pretty tough and repetitive later on.
