There are many ways roguelikes can be designed to be fun and rewarding, but one must still preserve a few elements that are representative to the genre. Hence, it wouldn’t be authentic without permadeath, randomly generated levels and a variety of classes to choose from. On the other hand, as long as the experience is fun and engaging, gamers are willing to forgive slip-ups.
Ananias Roguelike tries to be as classic as it can get, by featuring almost every aforementioned element usually associated with the genre. Hence, you get to create a character at the beginning of the game, choose from a handful of different classes, and hope that you can make it to the end, because every death means a complete restart from the first level of the dungeon.
The classes are quite different in terms of gameplay, even if you only have a couple to choose from. Some are more gifted in the art of melee combat, such as the paladin, while others rely on spells and various scrolls looted from monsters in order to defeat their enemies. The balancing may not be perfect, but you can still have fun with any of the included classes, at least if you are patient and lucky enough.
One of the more intriguing aspects of the game is the fact that you equipment slowly gets damaged as you engage monsters in combat. It is also possible to be disarmed if the enemy has a certain ability, so the combat is certainly not as easy as you might believe. You can even choose a companion to join you in your quest, although they die rather quickly and are difficult to defend.
A multiplayer component is included as well, which means that you can go dungeon crawling with your friends if you choose to. However, the best experience is still in singleplayer, at least if you want to remain true to the genre. Speaking of which, the graphics are retro as well, and the entire interface is as basic as it gets. The combat takes place in turns, as does the movement, but you do have the option to just click on the room exit and skip walking altogether.
In the end, Ananias Roguelike has everything you need to relive the golden age of roguelikes, including randomly generated levels. Hence, you can replay the game as many times as you wish and still enjoy a different experience every time.
